Cite Walls, Carcassonne

The Château Comtal, the heart of the fortified city, stands high above the Bastide Saint Louis. Much of the current structure of Carcassonne's Cité was rebuilt from medieval remains. However, this elevated site has been of strategic importance for a long time, and there is evidence that it was fortified as long ago as 3500bc.
