The Ile d'Aix is a small island between France's west coast and the larger Ild d'Oléron. Accessible by ferries from Fouras and La Rochelle it is, except for service vehicles, car-free.

Le Fort de la Rade is an historic fortified and moated building, now converted to offer self catering breaks in this peaceful setting. Just 300 metres from the ferry landing jetty, the complex has its own large heated outdoor swimming pool, open June to September from 10am to 7pm.

All apartments have a small kitchen with fridge, hob, microwave oven/grill, dishwasher and coffee machine. There are studios for two, mezzanine studios for four, and one- and two bedroom apartments sleeping 4 to 8.

Meal cards are available for either evening meal only. or breakfast and evening meals.

Activities: On site is a sailing school, and the nearest beach is just 250 metres from the residence. There is a play area for kids, plus outdoor table tennis and pool tables. Bikes are available for hire.

Car parking is included in seven night prices, but not in short break prices. To Fouras (where the ferry runs from): Distances by road 486km from Paris, Nantes 165km, Bordeaux 162km. There is a railway station at Fouras. Nearest airport: La Rochelle, 45km.
