This south facing stone-built house was originally a section of the village ramparts. Whitewashed walls, terracotta floors and ancient beams create an atmosphere of quiet simplicity. The furnishings reflect the distinctive character of the house, combining comfort and convenience with authenticity. Thick walls ensure that the interior is cool in the summer heat.

Outside, the secluded courtyard garden enjoys day long sunshine. It is shaded by cypress and olives, fragrant with jasmine and herbs. There are two garden tables and a barbecue.

The ground floor kitchen/dining room retains many original features and has excellent cooking facilities. A stable door opens on the courtyard and a spiral staircase leads to the first floor. Here, there is a twin bedroom and a landing which can accommodate the folding cot. The second floor, from which there are panoramic views towards the Mediterranean the Pyrénées and Narbonne, consists of a twin bedroom, a shower room/WC and a small seating area with a fold out bed.

Set in a landscape of craggy gorges, sheltered valleys, silvery olive groves and scented pinewoods, the village of Villespassans perches in the hills above the coastal plain. It is 27km from both Beziers and Narbonne, near the busy market town of St Chinian. To the north are the mountains of the Regional Park, to the south the Mediterranean, Pyrenees and Spain. The village itself, surrounded by vineyards and the aromatic garrigue, gives access to scenic walks in every direction.

Local activities include tennis, canoeing, horse riding, superb rock climbing pitches, mountain biking, fishing and swimming as well as the well-marked walking circuits around neighbouring villages.

There is a small village shop for essentials and more comprehensive shopping at St Chinian (7km). Many restaurants are within 10 minutes drive.

By Road - The village is 25 minutes from Autoroute A9 exits at Beziers and Narbonne. Thereafter approached from N112 or D5. Detailed directions are supplied.

Airports: Carcassonne (1hr), Beziers/Agde, Perpignan, Montpellier, Toulouse, Nimes, Girona.
